Polish Liberals Call for Recount After Presidential Election Defeat ━ The European Conservative

Rafał Trzaskowski’s campaign has officially asked for a recount in Poland’s recent presidential runoff, claiming there were problems with how the vote was counted. The vote, held earlier this month, was narrowly won by conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki.

Trzaskowski, who ran with support from liberal prime minister Donald Tusk’s Civic Platform party, lost to Nawrocki, who was backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party. Even though the result was close, most experts say the gap was too large for small mistakes to change the outcome.

Still, Trzaskowski’s team wants the results checked again. “We’ve reviewed data from over 31,000 polling stations,” said Cezary Tomczyk, a Civic Platform leader. “I am filing a personal protest and encourage others to do the same.”

The deadline for election complaints is Monday. If Poland’s Supreme Court does not agree to review the case, Nawrocki’s win will be confirmed, and he will take office on August 6th.
