A pro-Palestine demonstration in the German capital led to serious violence and multiple arrests on Thursday, May 15th. Police made 30 arrests, including 20 temporary detentions, and reported serious injuries to two or more police officers, including a broken hand.
Protestors threw objects at the police including stones, drinks cans and bottles, and red paint, chanting “German police—murderers and fascists.” Most chanting was aimed at Israel, including the antisemitic ‘from the River to the Sea‘ slogan.
The Palestinian ‘Nakba’ commemoration march was already the subject of controversy following legal disputes over the route, with police pushing for a static demonstration instead of the proposed route—which was ultimately taken, following a court ruling.
