Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán responded to his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk on X Friday, after Tusk accused him of wanting Hungary to leave the European Union. “Hungary will not leave the EU,” Orbán wrote in response, making his position very clear.
Dear Donald,
Don’t raise your hopes too high. Hungary will not leave the EU. We will transform it with the @PatriotsEU, to restore it to what it once was when Poland and Hungary joined.Back then, Brussels bureaucrats served the people instead of themselves. Back then,… https://t.co/AmbCyl6Q9d

On Wednesday, Tusk tweeted:
Prime Minister Orbán is now speaking openly about Hungary leaving the European Union. … It was worth winning the elections so that Kaczyński’s dream of a “Budapest in Warsaw” would never come true. This is also at stake in the upcoming elections.
The elections he refers to are the Polish presidential elections, scheduled for May 18th.
Tusk also took the opportunity to fire shots at his political opponent Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice (PiS) Party, by emphasizing Kaczyński’s support for Hungary’s successful conservative policies. His tweet refers to a comment Kaczyński made on election night 2011: “Ladies and Gentlemen, I am deeply convinced that the day of our success will come, that Warsaw will be like Budapest.”
Orbán denied the allegations that he wants to leave the EU and said he wants to “transform it with the Patriots of Europe, to restore it to what it once was when Poland and Hungary joined.”Back then, Orbán said, Brussels bureaucrats “served the people instead of themselves” and ”didn’t interfere in the internal political debates” of member states as they do nowadays.
