A previously unknown guerrilla group has claimed responsibility for the bombing of Hellenic Trains offices last week. The statement of the group calling itself Revolutionary Class Self-defence was published on the Athens Indymedia and said they they had carried out the April 11th bombing, in retaliation for a 2023 train crash that killed 57 people. Greek police said on Monday, April 14th that their anti-terrorism unit is investigating the group.
The explosion last Friday caused minor damage and no injuries, as police could evacuate the area in time after two media outlets received calls warning of the attack.
In their statement, the group said the attack was responding to underinvestment and safety concerns at the railway privatised during the 2009-2018 Greek debt crisis. Hellenic Train is owned by the Italian state railways, Ferrovie dello Stato, operating both passenger and freight routes in Greece.
In the same statement, the guerrillas also claimed responsibility for a 2024 attack on the labour ministry in Athens, which also caused no injuries after police evacuated the area following a warning.
According to the statement, the group dedicated both attacks to Palestinians in the Gaza war.
