A legislative proposal to prohibit LGBT marches and related “colorful items” has been introduced to the Georgian parliament, according to Speaker of Parliament Shalva Papuashvili.
This type of proposal, which is an initiative signed by citizens, is not a draft law. Whether it becomes a bill will depend on the relevant committee. Papuashvili confirmed that the proposal will be forwarded to the Human Rights Committee for consideration.
Although the complete details of the bill are not yet available, its title and initial remarks indicate an attempt to limit public expressions linked to the LGBT community, such as marches, rallies, and the use of symbols like rainbow flags.
In September 2024, the Georgian parliament adopted a ‘Family Values and Protection of Minors’ bill outlawing same-sex marriage, adoption by same-sex couples, gender reassignment surgeries, as well as any kind of display or promotion of LGBT ideology in schools.
The news about the Georgian citizens’ initiative comes shortly after the Hungarian parliament, with 83% of MPs in favor, outlawed Pride parades and public events promoting LGBT identities.
