The number of physical assaults committed against teachers in Belgium’s Dutch-speaking region of Flanders has risen by 65% in four years, according to the right-wing Vlaams Belang (Flemish Interest) party, which requested the information from the Belgian interior ministry.
The total number of cases registered in Flanders in 2023 was 357, compared to 217 in 2020.
“Tussen 2020 en 2023 – het laatste jaar waarvoor volledige cijfers beschikbaar zijn – is het aantal geregistreerde gevallen van slagen en verwondingen tegen personeel van onderwijsinstellingen in Vlaanderen met 65 procent toegenomen.” @Barbara_Pashttps://t.co/KJhWpDqdMY

But the phenomenon is not limited to Flanders. “In Brussels, the number of cases even increased by 90 percent between 2020 and 2024, and in Wallonia there was also an increase of 54 percent in the same period,” Vlaams Belang MP Barbara Pas said.
The party is calling for a tougher approach to violence and intimidation in schools, with a particular focus on violence against teachers.
