Czechia’s Interior Minister Vít Rakušan of the STAN movement—the third largest in the Czech parliament—has said that a number of proposals aimed at tightening immigration laws are on the floor of the House of Representatives for debate.
The Interior Ministry states that police will be allowed to confiscate the mobile phones of individuals who cannot provide valid ID, in order to track their movements and determine how they entered the country. This measure would help authorities identify asylum seekers’ places of residence or facilitate deportations.
“Let’s stop saying that the migration pact is an invitation for migrants. This is tightening the conditions for illegal migration,” said Rakušan.
According to STAN MP Petr Letocha, the government coalition plans to propose shortening the negotiation period for changes to migration and asylum rules by at least 30 days.
“The point is that we can tighten the legislation and speed up deportations,” said Pavel Žáček, chairman of the security committee from the ODS.
Letocha emphasized that the main objective is to pass the law within the current electoral term. “We know that it will not be easy, especially when we see how the Chamber of Deputies works. Therefore, we will definitely come up with a request to shorten the deadlines by at least 30 days,” he stated.
